Silver Thiosulfate (STS) is used to inhibit production of ethylene, the plant hormone that induces formation of female reproductive structures. In the absence of ethylene, male pollen sacs are formed by default, and any pollen produced -- in minimal amounts compared to a normal male -- will be female only.
Varinaut STS Instructions
CAUTIONS:
• All chemicals and solutions are moderately toxic.
• Minimize exposure of chems and solutions to light.
• Keep BOTH the dry chemicals and the solutions in the refrigerator -- the dry chems in sealed, opaque containers, and the solutions in opaque or amber containers.
• Both stock solutions will last for a year or more if stored as specified.
• The final product, the Silver Thiosulfate solution, can be stored for several months in an amber spray bottle in the fridge.
Materials:
• 100 ml plastic graduated cylinder
• 10 ml glass graduated cylinder or graduated dropper
• 100+ ml glass amber spray bottle
• 2 x 100 ml glass amber or opaque liquid storage bottles
• Distilled water
Preparation of Stock Solns:
1. Dissolve 2.48 g Sodium Thiosulfate Pentahydrate in 100 ml distilled water
2. Dissolve 0.43 g Silver Nitrate in 25 ml distilled water
Store both stock solutions in the refrigerator in opaque or amber containers for a year or more.
Preparation of Silver Thiosulfate:
1. Measure 85 ml distilled water into a >= 100 ml amber spray bottle
2. Stir in 12 ml of Sodium Thiosulfate stock solution
3. Stir in 3 ml of Silver Nitrate stock solution
This final solution can be stored in the refrigerator for several months
Application of Silver Thiosulfate:
STS MUST be sprayed on buds liberally AFTER lights-out, beginning the FIRST night of 12/12, and repeat every 7 days for a total of 3 applications. Pollen sacs begin developing in week 3.
Only the treated buds will produce pollen sacs. Untreated buds will develop normally as female, and will produce S1 feminized seeds if allowed to pollinate itself. If you vary from these instructions, results can be mixed
