Dude @InternationalBeanSmuggler , I have a sandstone, wood-fired cookpit outside that I built myself out of stones and an ancient but effective form of concrete. Shall I bbq this weekend???

I'll definitely get it going tomorrow night then. It will be a good way to end a day in the woods anyhow. Gotta go get firewood for the winter. Here's that cookpit. It's almost 3 feet deep inside if I scoop out all the ash. The big iron grate is from one of those oldfangled standing grills like they used to have in parks.

How do you make the concrete? Is this what you used to mortar the stone?
Looks really cool @Wylde Bobb , I can imagine sitting in front of that ,fired up, with a cold drink and a joint :sun:
What kind of things do you like to cook on it? :)

Haha that is more or less the way I sit in front of it, or rather off to the side because it holds a LOT of heat. I cook all sorts of things. Hamburgers, sausages, racks of ribs, tenderloin, steak, etc. Lots of game, like venison and elk. Sometimes I marinade some meat and then roast it with some mushrooms and peppers as shish kabob. I also cook a lot in cast irons, so if I'm making a side or something I'll just throw the cast iron on the grill with the meat to save energy. Tonight I'll probably cook a rack of bbq pork ribs on it. Oh, and for the mortar, I took some of our high-clay soil, water, ash, sand, some random dead grass, and a splash of cooking oil and mixed that up. Old fashioned as fuck, but it works :)

    Sounds awesome @Wylde Bobb !

I just have a lodge brand cast iron skillet pan at the moment, but it has to be my single favourite pan
Bone in rib seared in the skillet and basted with butter, rosemary and garlic then finished in the oven and rested so it's still nice and pink and juicy = my idea of heaven
The game you're cooking sounds amazing. That's some real meat not like the antibiotic pumped supermarket stuff! I bet it tastes delicious :kissing_heart:
Do you butcher the animals yourself? Are these game you've hunted?

I haven't actually been able to go hunting myself yet, but that's a goal I definitely have for next fall, or perhaps the one after. I live in a very rural area, so I have access to game meat, and it is often a trade item out here. The way I like to do the ribs is to lay out two sheets of aluminum foil, crosswise, then set the ribs in the middle. then you cover the ribs entirely in the bbq sauce of your choice. Then close first one and then the other aluminum foil sheet and just roast it like that. Takes 2 hours in the oven or 1 on the cookpit. SO good, turns it almost into bbq pulled pork. Btw, my lodge skillet is my favorite pan too!

I really want to have a go at building something like this in the spring, doesn't look to hard. Then I can wood fire my own pizzas :yum

I ended up getting around to that BBQ on Sunday night. Made a rack of pork spare ribs rubbed with brown sugar, cracked pepper, and BBQ seasoning. Baked them in the oven with a jar of cherry chipotle bbq salsa in the foil pack, to roast the flavor in, then finished on the grill with some raspberry chipotle sauce mixed with drippings from the foil pack. Burgers also, with steak sauce worked into the meat. Did the last pic twice, with and without flash. Btw IBS that bird looks incredible. Good work dude 003.JPG 004.JPG 005.JPG 006.JPG 008.JPG 009.JPG 010.JPG

Drooling at the pics @Wylde Bobb I bet those ribs and burgers taste absolutely epic, flame grilled with a hint of smokiness! :yum
I like my burgers with loads of gherkins, some jalapenos for heat, cheese, lettuce, red onion, mustard, mayo, ketchup and a dash of hot sauce in a toasted bun, sometimes a nice slice of beef tomato in there too :grinning:
Next time I'm at the shops I'll have to grab some nice steak mince and make some smashed quarter pounders!!! I've got burgers on the brain now
